Hi! My name is Janice and I thought I would tell you a bit about myself. My husband and I moved to Nanaimo in 1980, and I am the mother of four and the grandmother of five. My number one hobby, after family time, is fishing especially on the west coast of Vancouver Island along with my husband. My adventure in counselling began in 2002 at a local agency where I worked with youth and their families focusing on relationship. For the past ten years I have worked with children/youth and their families/caregivers in the area of sexual abuse and have loved every minute of it. I cannot express enough the privilege and gratitude I feel when others allow me into their world. The most important message I want to convey to someone who has experienced sexual abuse, no matter what the story line is, that they have done NOTHING wrong. The perpetrator is 100% responsible for the violence they have inflicted on another. My belief that we all have the ability to heal and decrease the inner pain we are experiencing was reinforced over and over again by watching and celebrating my client’s successes. The efforts we all put into our relationships whether it is with our partner, friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, always leave me amazed. As the Greek philosopher Aristotle said, “Man is by nature a social animal” and even if we do not want to believe it, other’s do matter. My goal as a counsellor is to help one gain a deeper appreciation for self, create perhaps a different perspective or understanding of other important players in one’s life and reduce the emotional pain that keeps us from living the best life we can live.
Be who you are and say what you feel
Because those who mind don’t matter
and those who matter don’t mind.
-Dr. Seuss-
Through my journey as a counsellor, I have been fortunate to gain a greater understanding of the challenges and complexities of adversity and systemic racism and discrimination. I work hard to be conscious of my own behaviour and the behaviour of others and work at being thoughtful and challenge the views and beliefs I grew up with. For victims of violence, social responses from parents, family, peers, police, social workers and other community helpers, has a direct impact on how one heals from this kind of trauma. When I began this journey, I had limited awareness of LGBTQIA2S+. Thanks to many of my clients and their allies who are members of this community, along with the education I have pursued, I recognize how essential it is that we all accept and support people whose identity assigned at birth is not a fit for them. It is so important to feel good in our skin and to support others who want to present themselves in the world with their identity of choice and sexual orientation with dignity.
So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colours, true colours are beautiful,
Like a rainbow.
-Cindy Lauper-
My work is guided by many theories including Bowen Family Systems Theory, Response-Based Practice, Feminist Theory, Attachment-based Theory but my favorite of all is the work by Carl Rogers called Humanistic Theory. I am happy to discuss more about my practice. I offer a free 15-minute discussion via telephone to new clients.
We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen
With real understanding, true empathy.
Yet listening, of this special kind,
Is one of the most potent forces for change
That I know.
